Evaluation and Reflection

9/5/25

This week, I made a start on my FMP in which I have decided to create a magazine based on transformation and I also did some research as well based on a tadpole turning to a frog through transformation.

This week, I carried on with my FMP and made some good progress.  I used my magazine to copy and paste the different images and text I'd used onto Google Slides.  I also took screenshots of the work I'd done and put it on my blog to show that I experimented with what I had done so far.  However, in progression, I also used Adobe InDesign as well to make a start although I still have a little bit more to do.

For my FMP, my media product is a magazine.

For my FMP proposal, I stated I was going to create a magazine based on the transformation of a tadpole to a frog.  I decided on transformation as a theme as we had recently covered this (during vox pops) and chose to create a magazine as text and photographic images would show the transformation process.

Unfortunately, I did not meet the deadline that was set.  This was mainly because I found it challenging to come up with an idea for a media product.  After discussion, with my tutors, I decided to do a magazine. To begin with I started using Canva for my FMP and was advised to do sketches of tadpoles and frogs instead.  After completing some sketches, I researched and wrote the text for my magazine.  Following this, I researched images from the internet, then I created Google Slides to combine all of my research.  However, the presentation was quite basic and I was advised to use Adobe InDesign. To understand how to use InDesign, I listened to my tutor’s recording to learn the steps. In the beginning, it took me time to understand how to use the software to start my own layout as I struggled with how to insert images (my original image and two internet images) and the text. My tutor helped me to become confident about using the software and to experiment with my two page layout.

Overall, I am really pleased with the final outcome because I produced a well presented magazine article (2 pages) with good content.  The most challenging parts were brainstorming and using the software but I persevered with my tutors’ encouragement and my determination.

My FMP media product is a magazine targeted at readers aged between 10-13 year olds.  It meets the needs of the target audience through the use of colour, typography and positioning of text and images.  The text colour is green, which reflects the colour of nature.  The typography stands out and makes it easier to capture the target audience’s attention.  The layout is eye catching and spread out in a way to keep the audience’s attention.

My media product functions as a magazine article.  The final layout is successful with the first page including the article heading, an original image of the pond, an image of tadpoles, a sub-heading on the left and the article text in two vertical columns in the center and right.  The article heading (Tadpole Transformation) is font Lobster, size 24.  The sub-heading (So how does it all begin?) is font Verdana, size 18.  The article is all in font Minion pro, size 14. On page one, underneath the sub-heading and middle column, there white empty space to make it user friendly for the target audience.  The second page includes one horizontal image of a frog and the content below it includes a sub-heading and an article.  I used a similar layout with three columns - one for the sub-heading and the other two for the article. The sub-heading (Under the spotlight) is in font Barlow Condensed, size 24.  The article is in the same font and size as the first page (Minion pro, size 14) to show consistency in the article. The white space is mostly under the sub-heading on the second page; this makes it stand out more.

I did not use any video for my project.

I used Adobe InDesign to create my magazine.  I used my Apple iPhone camera to take an image of a local pond.  Due to time limitations, I did not use any editing tools to create any effects.

The typography I used for my magazine article title ‘Tadpole Transformation’ is font Lobster, size 24 in bold and italic, and all in capital letters.  The sub-heading (first page) ‘So how does it all begin?’ is font Verdana, size 18 in normal text.  The sub-heading (second page) ‘Under the spotlight’ is font Barlow Condensed, size 24 in bold and all in capital letters.  The text for the article (both pages) is Minion pro, in size 14 in normal text.

Magazines influenced my design, in particular, a magazine called The Week Junior.  The magazine has a similar audience to the age category I was targeting with my magazine article.  Also, the layout and the format inspired me for own my design.  Finally, the layout of the vertical columns is also an approach I used for my final magazine article.

The layout of my magazine article worked really well.  It is eye catching and captures the target audience’s attention with the typography, images and content. The green text reflects the colour of nature which is highlighted against the white background.

I think my product does match up to my initial idea as I wanted to focus on the transformation of a tadpole to a frog in my magazine and I have achieved this.  In the beginning, I was thinking of including more pages but I am happy that I concentrated on two pages in the end.

If I had more time, I would have experimented more and edited the images I included.   On page one, I also would have expanded the images a bit more as they currently are narrow (especially the pond image).  Also, I would have included some captions under the images to provide an explanation.  I also think I could have improved the main title with a larger size font in a different style.

I think that I can experiment more at home with media for example using the camera more, being confident and just trying things.  I also think that I can learn to challenge myself more and just believe that I know I can do it but I just need to put my mind to some things a bit more.  I also think that I need to also try new things as well like doing filming and take the initiative as well.

I think I can use the research and final production possibly because it comes in quite handy and very helpful.  The reason why I'd say this is because if I've been assigned another task like this again, then I know that I can do the research in a similar way to how I did for the FMP project based on transformation.  This is very useful for me.
